DUBLIN, Ireland: For the first time, Ireland has been listed as one of the 10 safest countries in the world for tourists to visit.
In the most recent Global Peace Index, published by Conde Nast Magazine, Ireland was ranked the eighth safest destination for tourists out of 163 countries worldwide.
Since 2016, Ireland had been ranked as the 11th safest country.
In the annual review, it was noted Ireland's "relatively low crime rates," as well as its "good economy and happy and friendly residents."
It said these qualities "more than made up for any pandemic blips."
Ireland was the only new country to be listed in the Top 10, while Singapore was removed from last year's list.
The ranking is based on the Global Peace Index developed by the Institute of Economics and Peace, which has been published annually since 2009.
The rankings are determined by evaluating the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarization in countries.
It also takes into accounts such data as incarceration rates, homicide levels and perception of criminality.
Though Ireland was ranked 18th in domestic safety and security in the current list, it was also first for lack of domestic and international conflict.
Iceland remained the safest country in the world for tourists for the 13th consecutive year.
