SANYA, China: Following a Covid lockdown, some 80,000 tourists cannot leave the southern Chinese beach resort of Sanya.
The restrictions were imposed as Chinese authorities worked to halt the spread of COVID-19 in the city, located on Hainan Island.
Officials said there were 229 confirmed cases on August 5 and an additional 129 on August 6.
The lockdown is part of China's "zero-COVID" policy.
After a quick-spreading outbreak recently occurred in Shanghai, the entire population was locked down for two months.
Meanwhile, a ban on the sale of railway tickets has been put in place in Sanya, and the airport has been closed.
Regulations call for having five negative PCR Covid tests during a seven day period for anyone seeking to leave the city.
For stranded tourists, Sanya hotels will offer guests a 50 percent discount on room rates during the lockdown period, according to a city official.
The lockdown has occurred during the peak tourism season in Sanya, which is famous for its resorts and beaches.
